One-Way Entrance

This is the entrance to the Risiera di San Sabba in Trieste, Italy. This place, which was formerly a rice-husking facility, is sadly infamous for being turned into a prison camp under the Nazi occupation. This is arguably the only true concentration camp in Italy, because not only did it serve as a prison, but it also had a crematory plant build in it.
Not only in this place were imprisoned political opponents, partisans and their families, captured in retaliation, but Italian Jews were of course kept there waiting to be deported to Central European camps, especially Auschwitz. For too many people, this gate was a one-way entrance, for once inside, their fate was doomed: they were either killed therein or would only get out to be deported to a more horrible place.
Long after the war, the Risiera was turned into a national monument by Presidential decree, and subsequently into a museum to keep the remembrance alive. You can find more information on the official website.
