Shrouds

During my trip to Trieste last spring, I had the unique chance to visit the French three-masted barque, Belem, which was docked for a couple of days in the harbour.
One of her adventures was narrowly escaping the eruption of the Mount Pelée in Saint-Pierre de la Martinique on 8 May 1902. All the docks in Saint-Pierre were full, so Captain Julien Chauvelon angrily decided to dock her a few miles away on a beach, which was sheltered from the volcanic explosion.
